Bally, Charles (1865–1947)

Swiss linguist. He became professor of linguistics at the University of Geneva in 1913. A follower of Ferdinand de Saussure, he was one of the founders of the study of stylistics.

His publications include Precis de stylistique 1905, Traite de stylistique française 1909, Le langage et la vie 1913, and Linguistique generale et linguistique française 1932. He was born in Geneva.
