Ballynahinch

Village in County Galway, Republic of Ireland, 11 km/7 mi southeast of Clifden; population (2002) 5,400. It lies beneath the Twelve Bens (or Twelve Pins), a series of conical mountains that dominate the landscape. Ballynahinch Lake is popular for salmon and sea-trout fishing.

Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is a converted 18th-century house, and was once the home of Richard (‘Humanity Dick’) Martin, a founder of the UK's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Ballynahinch

Market town in County Down, Northern Ireland, 18 km/11 mi northwest of Downpatrick; population (2001) 5,400. It has carpet manufacture, civil engineering, and construction industries. There is trout fishing on the Montalto Estate Lake on the outskirts of the town.

Ballynahinch was the site of one of the last conflicts between the United Irishmen and British troops in the North in 1798.

A small islet 11 km/7 mi southeast of Ballynahinch, near Loughin Island, appears to have been the site of a monastic settlement before the 13th century. There are three ruined churches here.
