Balogh, Thomas (1905-1985)

Hungarian-born British economist whose work was influential in shaping the economic policies of the Labour governments of Harold Wilson in the 1960s and 1970s.

Balogh was born in Budapest, and educated at the universities of Budapest, Berlin, and Harvard. He was a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford (1945-73) and reader in economics at Oxford (1960-73). He acted as economic adviser to the cabinet from 1964-67, and consultant to the prime minister in 1968. His publications include Economic Policy and Price Mechanism (1961), Labour and Inflation (1970), and Fact and Fancy: an essay in monetary reform (1973).
