Vorster, John (1915-1983)

South African National Party politician, prime minister 1966-78, and president 1978-79. During his term as prime minister some elements of apartheid were allowed to lapse, and attempts were made to improve relations with the outside world. He resigned the presidency because of a financial scandal.
