Baltimore County

County in northern central Maryland, bounded to the north by Pennsylvania, to the southeast by Chesapeake Bay and the Gunpowder River, and to the south and southwest by the Patapsco River; area 1,549 sq km/598 sq mi; population (1990) 692,100. It does not include the city of Baltimore; its capital is Towson. Manufacturing includes communications equipment, scientific instruments, and electric tools. Agriculture and tourism are also important.

Baltimore County lies primarily in the Piedmont region, with an area of the southeast in the coastal plain. It includes Loch Raven and Prettyboy reservoirs, and many suburbs of Baltimore.
