Baltistan

Region in the Karakoram range of northeast Kashmir, western Ladakh, held by Pakistan since 1949. The region lies to the south of K2, the world's second highest mountain (8,611 m/28,2161 ft); the average elevation is 3,350 m/11,000 ft. It contains the upper reaches of the Indus River. It is the home of Balti Muslims of Tibetan origin.

The chief town is Skardu, but Ghyari is of greater significance to Muslims as the site of a mosque built by Sayyid Ali Hamadani, a Persian who brought the Shiah Muslim religion to Baltistan in the 14th century.
