BaltistanRegion in the Karakoram range of northeast Kashmir, western Ladakh, held by Pakistan since 1949. The region lies to the south of K2, the world's second highest mountain (8,611 m/28,2161 ft); the average elevation is 3,350 m/11,000 ft. It contains the upper reaches of the Indus River. It is the home of Balti Muslims of Tibetan origin.
