Bamert, Matthias (1942– )

Swiss conductor and composer. He studied in Paris with Pierre Boulez and worked with the Cleveland Orchestra and the US Symphony Orchestra. He was music director of the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra 1977–83 and principal guest with the Scottish National Orchestra from 1985. He has also led the Ulster Orchestra (Sibelius and Saariaho), BBC Symphony Orchestra (first performance of Martin Butler's O Rio!, 1991), the National Youth Orchestra at the 1993 London Proms (Gawain's Journey by Harrison Birtwistle), and the London Mozart Players from 1993.
