lobelia) Lobelia, Shira Plateau, Tanzania. The lobelia family contains over 750 species of flowering plant, native to both hemispheres. They are mostly small annual plants, but the tall tree-lobelias of East Africa grow for about twenty years and flower only once. Any of a group of temperate and tropical plants with white to mauve flowers. Lobelias may grow to shrub size but are mostly small annual plants. (Genus Lobelia, family Lobeliaceae.)
