Banagher

Village on the River Shannon, in County Offaly, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 1,800. Banagher is an inland fishing centre and a base for cruising and canoeing. A great variety of bird species can be found on the Shannon Callows, and there is a sanctuary for corncrakes.

Anthony Trollope, while working as a Post Office surveyor, wrote his first novels in Banagher. A B Nicholls, the husband of the novelist Charlotte Brontë, died and was buried here.

Greencore Malt has responded by closing three of its smaller less efficient maltings - Ipswich, Carnoustie and Banagher.
It closed two of its smaller maltings in the UK at the start of the period and announced the closure of its smaller Irish maltings at Banagher, which will be implemented by the end of the financial year.
