Banda Islands

Group of islands in the Banda Sea, in southern Maluku province, Indonesia; area 103 sq km/ 40 sq mi; population (1998 est) 15,000. The islands are volcanic in origin and densely forested. Sago, coconuts, nutmeg, and mace are produced, mainly by shifting cultivation. Tourism is increasing as passenger ships call at the islands.

Banda became the centre of nutmeg production after the Dutch monopolized the Moluccan spice trade in the 17th century. The traditionally animist Bandanese were strongly influenced by Christianity under the Dutch.
