Bandar-e 'Abbas

Port and capital of Hormozgan province, Iran, on the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf; population (2006) 379,300. Formerly called Gombroon, it was renamed and made prosperous by Shah Abbas I (1571–1629). It is a naval base and winter resort.

The domestic flight, operated by the tour arm of flag carrier Iran Air, originated in Bandar Abbas.
The Iranians are also building a rail line from the Turkmen border to their southern port of Bandar Abbas, so that Turkmenistan can eventually export gas to Asia.
The line slips into Turkmenistan to connect the Central Asian nation with the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas, opening up trade possibilities for South-East Asian trade into that part of the continent.
