Bandelier, Adolph (Francis Alphonse) (1840–1914)

Swiss explorer, archaeologist, and author. Bandelier did much archaeological field work in South America during the late 19th-century, and was known as the first American archaeologist. He joined the staff of the American Museum of Natural History in 1903, before teaching at Columbia University and the the Carnegie Institution of Washington. As well as publishing much scholarly work, he wrote two novels. Bandelier died whilst conducting research in Spain.
