Banderas, (Jose) Antonio (Dominguez) (1960– )

Spanish actor. His early films in Spain include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (1990), both of which were international successes. He went to Hollywood in 1991 and played a Cuban trumpeter in the film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love (1992). In 1996 he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for his starring role in the film adaptation of the musical Evita.

His other films include Philadelphia (1993), Interview with the Vampire, Desperado (1995), Assassins (1995), The Mask of Zorro (1998), and Frida (2002). He made his directorial debut with Crazy in Alabama (1999), starring his wife, US actor Melanie Griffith.
