Banjarmasin

River port in Indonesia, on the island of Borneo; capital of Kalimantan Selatan province; population (2000) 527,700. Exports include pepper, coal, iron, rubber, timber, and precious stones.

Much of the city is built on piles in the surrounding rivers. The university was founded in 1960.
