BanguiCapital and main river port of the Central African Republic, on the River Ubangi; population (2003) 531,800. The country's leading commercial and educational centre, Bangui is also its centre for light industries, including beer, cigarettes, office machinery, timber and metal products, textiles, leather goods, and soap. Bangui is the country's main depot for the storage and transportation of imported petroleum products. The city, which also serves as an outlet for the Republic of Chad, has a considerable trade in cotton, coffee, timber, and diamonds. The city was founded in 1889.
