BanjulCapital and chief port of Gambia, on an island at the mouth of the Gambia River; population of urban area (1995 est) 186,000; city (1995 est) 58,700. It is located 195 km/121 mi southeast of Dakar (capital of Senegal). Industries include peanut processing and exporting, brewing, and tourism (centred at the nearby resorts of Bakau, Fajara, Kotu, and Kololi). HistoryEstablished in 1816 as a settlement for freed slaves, it was known as Bathurst until 1973.
