Banks, Gordon (1937- )

English footballer. Banks kept goal for England's 1966 World Cup-winning side. Widely recognized as one of the world's greatest goalkeepers, his brilliant reflexes were most memorably displayed by his famous save from Pelé in the 1970 World Cup finals, which has been called the ‘save of the century’. He won 73 full England caps between 1963 and 1972 before an eye injury sustained in a car accident prematurely ended his international career.
