Banská Bystrica

Industrial town (textiles) in the Slovak Republic, on the River Hron, 160 km/100 mi northeast of Bratislava; population (2001 est) 84,400. It is the capital of the Central Slovakia region, and has Gothic churches.

Copper and silver were mined here in the Middle Ages.
