Bantry

Seaport in County Cork, Republic of Ireland, at the head of Bantry Bay, 80 km/50 mi from Cork city; population (2002) 2,900. It is a commercial fishing port and market town, as well as a tourist resort. It also has engineering and building industries. Bantry House (built in 1740), open to the public, contains an eclectic collection of art and furniture.

There is a Regency Gothic church in the town, and a statue of St Brendan the navigator stands facing the sea. The headquarters of the environmental protection agency Earthwatch are here.

Bantry is a base for those exploring the scenery of Sheep's Head peninsula. The bay is 40 km/25 mi long and 6–10 km/4–6 mi broad, and allows for good anchorage. In 1689 a French fleet entered Bantry Bay to engage with the forces of William III; and in 1796 the bay was the scene of an unsuccessful French invasion to aid Republican troops.

T M Healy (1855–1931), leader of the Irish Party at Westminster and first governor general (1922–28) of the Irish Free State, was born in Bantry.

The former oil storage depot at Whiddy Island (built 1968) lies 2 km/1 mi west of Bantry Bay; work ceased here in 1979 following an explosion.
