Barère de Vieuzac, Bertrand (1755–1841)

French revolutionary. As deputy for Hautes-Pyrenées to the National Convention 1792, he voted for the death of the king. He was a member of the first and second Committees of Public Safety 1793, first supporting the Jacobin leader Maximilien Robespierre, but turning against him at his fall.

Barère de Vieuzac was imprisoned after the Reign of Terror, but escaped. He had begun his political career as a moderate, rapidly becoming more radical; after the Revolution he was employed by Napoleon, and when the monarcy was restored 1814 he turned royalist. Even so, he was exiled 1815 for his part in the death of Louis XVI, but was allowed to return to France 1830.

He was the last survivor of the Committee of Public Safety.
