Bar Harbor

Town on Mount Desert Island, southeast Maine, facing Frenchman Bay on the Atlantic Ocean; population (2000) 4,800. It is the commercial and service centre for the island and Acadia National Park, with a ferry service to Nova Scotia.

Rosco B Jackson Memorial Laboratory, a biological facility noted for its mice used in genetic research, and the College of the Atlantic (1969) are here. Early in the 20th century Bar Harbor was one of America's most fashionable resorts. Much of the area was destroyed by fire in 1947.
