Barati, George (1913-1998)

Hungarian-born US cellist, conductor, and composer. After studying in Budapest he emigrated to the USA in 1939, playing in the Westminster String Quartet and teaching at Princeton 1939-43. He was music director of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and Opera 1950-68, and from 1989 was director of the Barati Ensemble; as a conductor he has appeared with at least 80 orchestras. His music was influenced by Hungarian traditions and his experiences in the Pacific.
