barberry

Any spiny shrub belonging to the barberry family, with sour red berries and yellow flowers. These shrubs are often used as hedges. (Genus Berberis, family Berberidaceae.)

The barberry family also includes plants such as the May apple (Podophyllum peltatum) of the eastern North American woodlands.
