Barberton

City in South Africa, 40 km/25 mi south of Nelspruit, capital of Eastern Transvaal; population (1990) 27,600. It is the centre of an area of a prosperous subtropical agriculture. Asbestos, gold and chromite are mined locally.

Barberton enjoyed a boom following the discovery of gold in the De Kaap valley between 1875 and 1882.

City in northeastern Ohio, 10 km/6 mi southwest of Akron (of which it is a residential and industrial suburb), on the Tuscarawas River; population (1990 est) 27,600. Local manufacturing includes rubber products, aluminium, chemicals, boilers, and insulators.

Founded about 1890, the city was named after Ohio Columbus Barber, president of the Diamond Match Company, who moved his firm's Akron branch here. The site, originally home to Delaware American Indians, includes Lake Anna, in the centre of the city.
