Barbourville

City and administrative headquarters of Knox County, southeastern Kentucky, 140 km/90 mi southeast of Lexington, in the Cumberland Mountains; population (1990) 3,700. It is an agricultural centre trading in tobacco, vegetables, sorghum, strawberries, and timber. There is some light industry, including wood and concrete products; the area also produces coal.

Barbourville was founded in 1800, on the Wilderness Road, and is a gateway to the Daniel Boone National Forest. Union College (1879) is here. The Dr Thomas Walker State Historic Site to the south has a replica of Walker's 1750 house, the first white home in Kentucky.
