Barbusse, Henri (1873–1935)

French writer. His novel Le Feu/Under Fire (1916), based on his experiences in World War I, was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1917.

Among his other novels are Les Suppliants/The Supplicants (1903), L'Enfer/The Inferno (1908), and Clarté/Clarity (1918). After the war he joined the Communist Party and was a frequent contributor to the communist daily paper L'Humanité and to Le Monde. His later writings are mainly nonfictional and reflect his political interests.
