Barddhaman

Town in West Bengal state, northeast India, 108 km/67 mi northwest of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); population (1991) 244,800. It is the commercial centre of a densely-farmed area in the irrigated Damodar valley. Built in the 1950s near local reserves of coal and iron ore, steel production is a core industry; others include light industrial manufacturing, food-processing, and fertilizer production.
