Bardstown

City and administrative headquarters of Nelson County, central Kentucky, 48 km/30 mi southeast of Louisville, on the Beech River; population (1990) 6,800. Since the 1770s the area has been the centre of Kentucky bourbon production, and the city has distilleries and a whiskey museum.

Federal Hill Manor (built 1795–1818) is said to have inspired US songwriter Stephen Foster's ‘My Old Kentucky Home’. Old Talbott Tavern (late 1700s) is said to be the oldest stagecoach stop in the USA and the oldest inn in continuous use west of the Allegheny Mountains.
