Bareilly

Industrial city in Uttar Pradesh, northern India; population (2001) 699,800. Its industries include sugar production, and furniture and rope manufacture. Founded in 1537, it was a Mogul capital in 1657 and ceded to the British in 1801. In 1857 it was a centre of the Indian Mutiny. Bareilly College was founded in 1837. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute is at Izatnagar, part of the Bareilly urban area.
