Barinas

State in western Venezuela; area 35,200 sq km/13,591 sq mi; population (1996) 519,197. It lies in the llanos (plains) region, and suffers alternately from droughts and floods. Several tributaries of the Orinoco River run through the state, including the Apuré and Santo Domingo rivers. The state capital is Barinas; population (1996) 179,660. A major cattle-raising state, Barinas diversified through the discovery of oil in the early 1950s; oil is now piped from Barinas to Puerto Cabello. With the subsequent influx of capital, extensive irrigation works have been built, malarial swamps drained, and all-weather highways built to serve the capital.
