Banks Island

Westernmost island of the Arctic Archipelago, in the western Northwest Territories, Canada; area 70,028 sq km/27,038 sq mi. It is largely a hilly Arctic plateau with high cliffs on several shores, and rises to 730 m/2,400 ft. Arctic fox, caribou, bears, wolves, other fur animals, and many bird species abound; there are two bird sanctuaries.

The island was formerly inhabited by Inuit; today, at Sachs Harbour (population (2006) 114) on the southwest coast, servicing an airfield, oil exploration, and trapping are the main occupations.
