baryton

Complex, bowed, stringed musical instrument producing an intense singing tone. It is based on an 18th-century viol and modified by the addition of sympathetic (freely vibrating) strings which are plucked by hand.

The baryton was a favourite instrument of Prince Nicholas Esterházy, patron of the Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn, who, to please him, wrote over 120 trios for violin, baryton, and cello, and many other works for the instrument.
