Barker, Jacob (1779–1871)

US merchant and financier. Barker's career was one of mixed fortune. Going bankrupt with his first business venture in 1801, he became a ship merchant, but lost all of his ships in the War of 1812. Barker founded the Exchange Bank in 1815, which failed in 1819, and he became director of the Life & Fire Insurance Company which collapsed during the 1823 depression. After being indicted for fraud, he became a lawyer, and then president of the Bank of Commerce. In 1869, sick and once again poor, he went to live with his son.
