Barkin, Elaine (1932– )

US composer and writer on music. She studied with Leo Kraft, Irving Fine, and Boris Blacher; edited the journal Perspectives of New Music 1963–85, and is on the faculty of University of California in Los Angeles. Her music is influenced by serialism, graphic notation, and interactive performance techniques.

string quartet (1969); Inward and Outward Bound for 13 instruments (1974); Ebb Tide for two vibraphones (1977); Encore for gamelan ensemble (1989).
