Barletta

Industrial port on the Adriatic Sea, Italy, 50 km/31 mi northwest of Bari; population (2001) 92,100. It is an agriculture centre trading in wine and fruit, and manufactures automobiles, chemicals, and soap. There is a Romanesque cathedral built in 1150 and a 13th-century castle.

Next to the church of S Sepolero is large bronze statue, 4.5 m/15 ft tall, said to be a Byzantine emperor (possibly Valentinian I).

The disfida di Barletta, a medieval pageant held in July, commemorates a contest during a siege by the French in 1503. The duel, fought between 13 knights of Italy and 13 from France for control of the town, was won by the Italians.
