Barlow, Peter

    0.03 sec.

Barlow, Peter (1776–1862)

English mathematician. He is chiefly remembered for publishing a highly accurate set of mathematical tables in 1814, revised versions of which are still in use.

Barlow was born in Norwich, and occupied the post of professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich 1806–48. His publications on pure mathematics include Elementary Investigation of the Theory of Numbers (1811) and his New Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary appeared in 1814. In applied mathematics, his studies in magnetic attraction led to improvements in the compass, and his compass pattern remained in use until superseded by the Thomson compass in 1876.
