Barlow, Stephen (1954– )

English conductor. After studying at the Guildhall School he conducted for the Glyndebourne Tour and Festival, leading Die Schweigsame Frau/The Silent Woman, Der Rosenkavalier/The Knight of the Rose, and Così fan tutte/Thus Do All Women; he led Scottish Opera from 1983 and Opera 80 from its inception, becoming musical director 1987. For the English National Opera Ensemble he has led the Der Fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman, Carmen, and Die Entführung aus dem Serail/The Abduction from the Harem, and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, he conducted Turandot and Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute (1989 and 1991). He has also conducted opera in San Francisco (Capriccio, in 1990), Vancouver, and Melbourne, and has led symphony concerts throughout Europe and North America.
