Barnack, Oscar

    0.04 sec.

Barnack, Oscar (1879–1936)

German camera designer, inventor of the popular 35-mm Leica camera, which first appeared in 1924.

Barnack's prototype was devised in 1914 and later refined by the Leitz company. Although it was not the first still camera to use 35-mm film, the Leica's ingenious, compact design and precision manufacture ensured its commercial success, and other makers soon adopted this format.
