Barnegat Bay

Tidal lagoon in southeastern New Jersey, 48 km/30 mi northeast of Atlantic City. It is 52 km/32 mi long and 6 km/4 mi wide, and lies within Island Beach and the northern part of Long Beach Island, with outlets through the Bayhead–Manasquan Canal, through Little Egg Harbor, and directly to the Atlantic through Barnegat Inlet.

Barnegat Lighthouse, built in 1855 and replaced in 1930 by an offshore lightship, is at Barnegat Inlet, the northern tip of Long Beach Island. Barnegat Light (population (1990) 700) lies just south of the lighthouse, while Barnegat (population (1990) 12,200) lies opposite, on the mainland.

Barnegat (Edward B Forsythe) National Wildlife Refuge, mostly west of the bay, comprises 3,070 ha/7,580 acres of coastal marsh.

The town's close proximity to Long Beach Island and the Barnegat Bay is an added bonus for residents of the development who enjoy recreational amenities such as swimming, fishing and boating.
For the past 10 years, I have sailed a pocket cruiser on New Jersey's Barnegat Bay, and at the end of each sail, I am consistently amazed that I am still alive and that Swee' Pea is unscathed.
Barnegat Bay was once a sleepy body of water by the New Jersey shore (see map, right).
