Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Barney, Natalie Clifford (1876–1972)

US hostess and writer. Barney was one of the most notable lesbians of her time, and while she wrote poetry, plays, fiction, and epigrams, much of her fame was a consequence of the support she gave to other women writers and the various love affairs she conducted. Barney relocated to Paris, where her salon was frequented by many European intellectuals and artists. Remy de Goncourt's Lettres à l'Amazone are addressed to her.
