Barnhart, Clarence L(ewis) (1900–1993)

US lexicographer. Together with the educator and psychologist Edward Lee Thorndike, Barnhart edited the Thorndike-Barnhart school dictionaries, which were widely used in American schools. His most lasting contribution to lexicography was the American College Dictionary (1947), which introduced the participation of leading linguists and psychologists and was the forerunner of the Random House dictionaries. Barnhart was also active in promoting a more linguistically informed approach to reading.
