Barnstable County

County in southeastern Massachusetts, coextensive with Cape Cod; area 1,036 sq km/400 sq mi; population (1997 est) 205,100. The capital is Barnstable. The county is a resort area, with fine beaches. Hyannis, Falmouth, and Provincetown are important commercial centres.

In the 19th century local industries included whaling, shipbuilding, and shipping. Today, in addition to tourism, the economy is based on oysters, fishing, and cranberry cultivation.
