Barnwell County

County in southwestern South Carolina, bordered by the Savannah River and the Georgia state boundary; area 1,445 sq km/558 sq mi; population (1990) 20,300. It is largely swamp and pine forest. Its capital is Barnwell (population (1990) 5,300).

About one-third of the county, in the west, is occupied by the US Department of Energy's Savannah River Nuclear Site (which it shares with neighboring Aiken County); in operation since the 1950s, this now includes the East's major nuclear waste disposal site, known simply as Barnwell. The county is otherwise mainly agricultural, producing timber and naval stores.
