Member of a large group of Bantu people living in Barotseland, in northwestern Zambia. An agricultural people, they also fish, hunt, and practise animal husbandry.

Their hereditary monarch had a number of subordinate chiefs and stewards who were given parts of the total territory to rule and from which to collect tribute. Since Zambian independence 1964, the power of their traditional authorities has been curtailed. The economic isolation of Barotseland has also led many to seek wage labour elsewhere.
