Barquisimeto

Capital of Lara state, northwestern Venezuela; population (2007 est) 833,300. It is the centre of a coffee-growing area and trades in coffee, cacao, sugar, and rum. Industries include flour milling, tanning, textiles, leather goods, footwear, biscuits, cigarettes, and cement. The city lies on both the Trans-Andean and Pan-American highways. It was first established in the 16th century, but needed to be rebuilt after a disastrous earthquake in 1812.

Lisandro Alvarado University was founded here in 1963.
