BarranquillaMajor port and capital of Atlántico department on the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia, on the western bank of the Magdalena River 16 km/10 mi upstream; population (1999 est) 1,223,300. Industries include chemicals, tobacco, food-processing, textiles, furniture, and footwear. Coffee, coal, oil and nickel are exported. It is a commercial centre and a terminal for river traffic. Founded in 1629, Barranquilla is Colombia's chief industrial port and the site of Latin America's first air terminal, built in 1919.
