BarranquillaMajor port and capital of Atlántico department on the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia, on the western bank of the Magdalena River 16 km/10 mi upstream; population (2005) 359,400; metropolitan area 1,694,700. Industries include chemicals, tobacco, food-processing, textiles, furniture, and footwear. Coffee, coal, oil and nickel are exported. It is a commercial centre and a terminal for river traffic. Founded in 1629, Barranquilla is Colombia's chief industrial port and the site of Latin America's first air terminal, built in 1919. Educational institutions include the Universidad Libre Seccional Barranquilla (1956). |
