Barrie

City and administrative headquarters of Simcoe County in southern Ontario, Canada, 80 km/50 mi northwest of Toronto, on Kempenfelt Bay of Lake Simcoe; population (1991) 62,700. It is a year-round resort in an agricultural and dairying region. Industries include tanneries, machine workshops, varied light manufacturing plants, and breweries. Camp Borden is to the southwest.

During the War of 1812 it was the starting point of a supply route to the upper Great Lakes. The area was permanently settled in 1828.
