Barrington

Town in northeastern Illinois, 52 km/32 mi northwest of Chicago, on Bakers Lake; population (1990) 9,500. Primarily a residential suburb, it has plants processing coffee and tea and producing tableware.

Barrington

Town in eastern Rhode Island, on the northeastern shore of Narragansett Bay, adjoining East Providence; population (1990) 15,800. It occupies two peninsulas separated by the estuarial Barrington River. It is a suburb and resort with some light industry.

It was settled in the 1670s by colonists who left Rehoboth, Massachusetts, because of religious differences, and became part of Rhode Island in 1746.
