Barrymore, John (1882-1942)

US stage and film actor. Brother of Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, he made his debut in 1903 and became a matinee idol, often appearing on stage and screen with his brother and sister. He triumphed as a stage Hamlet in 1922, then turned to films and radio, including Dinner at Eight in 1933. Married four times, he caricatured his own decadent life in a series of minor comedies, including The Great Profile (1940), which led to him being nicknamed ‘the Profile’.
